Friðrik Bergmann Jónsson was born on April 15, 1858 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla. He died in Winnipeg on April 11, 1918.

Friðrik emigrated west across the ocean to Wisconsin in the United States in 1875 and spent the first year with Rev. Páll Þorláksson. He enrolled in the Norwegian Latin School in Decorah, Iowa, graduating in 1881. He taught theology in Norway from 1883 -1885, then enrolled in the Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia in the fall of 1885, graduating in 1886. He became a pastor on June 17 of the same year and accepted a call from the Icelandic communities in N. Dakota. He retired from service in N. Dakota in 1902 and moved to Winnipeg where he worked for the rest of his life.
