Hallgrímur and Guðlaug traveled west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with their two children in 1904. Ingibjörg Bjarnadóttir, Hallgrímur’s mother, travelled with them to Canada where another son, Sigurður, had emigrated in 1888. Hallgrímur became ill with tuberculosis in Winnipeg.  They placed their children in foster care and sailed home to Iceland. Due to Hallgrímur’s illness and misunderstanding by the authorities in Reykjavík, they did not receive a residence permit and were forced to sail back across the Atlantic and then, again, with the same ship back to Iceland. In these voyages Guðlaug became pregnant and gave birth to twins, one lived. They moved east to their old district but were not allowed to stay under the same roof, Guðlaug was at Refstað with little Albert but that led to the end of Hallgrímur. Guðrún gave birth to a son in 1914 and the father was Kristinn Björnsson, a worker on the same farm. He died a few months later. Guðlaug did not return to the West.
