Björg came west to N. Dakota in 1887 traveling with her sister, Margrét, and her husband, Halldór Hjálmarsson. Björn learned carpentry in Copenhagen and came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his mother, Jóhanna Jónsdóttir, and his brother Jón. He soon found work in the city, but in 1888 he moved south to the Thingvalla Settlement in N. Dakota and lived there six years. From there, he moved west to the Pacific Ocean, but returned to Winnipeg in 1896 where the family lived from then on.
