Valgerður Sylvía Þorláksdóttir was born in 1863 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla. She died in 1909 in the Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan.

Sigurjón came west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1873. He lived in various places there and in Michigan. He moved to Ljósavatn County in the autumn of 1877 and participated in the land opening and settlement in N. Dakota in the summer of 1878. He took land in the Garðar Settlement and lived there until 1905, but then he moved to Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan. He took land west of Wynyard and lived there until 1910, then moved to the village of Wynyard with his unmarried children. He ran a butcher shop there until 1918, but sold it and lived with his children in the village.
