Jóhannes was the son of Vigfús Guðmundsson and Sigurbjörg Björnsdóttir. He came west with his mother and her husband, Sveinn Þorsteinsson, in 1876. They settled in Mikley in New Iceland. Sveinn died there and his mother lived a number of years in the Fljóts Settlement before moving to Pembina, N. Dakota in 1880. Jóhannes followed her through these years and moved with her to Mountain, N. Dakota and there he met Steinunn. They moved west to Alberta at the turn of the century and settled near Red Deer. Steinunn had come west to Canada in 1874 with her parents, Jason Þórðarson and Anna Jóhannesdóttir.
