Bjarni came west in 1888 with his parents, Guðmundur Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Bjarnadóttir, and his siblings. They settled in Lincoln County, Minnesota. It is said that Bjarni was engaged to Stefanía when he emigrated and may have encouraged Einar, her father, to move west. That was the case, Stefanía came to Minnesota in 1892 and stayed with Bjarni when her parents, Einar Jónsson and Hallfríður Þorgrímsdóttir, continued west to N. Dakota. Bjarni and Stefanía lived the longest in Lincoln County.
