Guðvaldur Jónsson was born in N. Þingeyjarsýsla on October 4, 1841. He died in 1926 in Saskatchewan. He took the last name Jackson in the west.

Guðvaldur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 and went onward to N. Dakota the same year with his wife and six of their children. Their oldest child, Sigríður, came west with her spouse and children in 1903. Guðvaldur’s daughter, Björg, and her mother Agnes came west a year later. Guðvaldur took land in the Akra Settlement south of the Tunguá (Tongue River). He sold it in 1899 and moved to Roseau, Minnesota. In the spring of 1907, Guðlaugur sold everything in Roseau and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, stayed there for a short time, then during the summer he moved to his home in the Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan.
