Stefán came west in 1877 with his parents, Guðmundur Pétursson (Peterson) and Sesselja Hermannsdóttir. They lived in Yellow Medicine County in Minnesota. Kristín was the daughter of Snorri Högnason and Vilborg Jónatansdóttir, who settled in Lyon County in Minnesota. Stefán grew up in his parent’s house in Minnesota and received a good education. He became an engineer.
