Jónatan came west to Ontario, Canada in 1878 with his mother, Þórunn Jónsdóttir, siblings, and step-father, Guðmundur Þórðarson. They moved from there in the same year to North Dakota. Jónatan and Ingibjörg took land in the Sand Hills Settlement in N. Dakota and lived there the rest of their lives.
