Jón Jónsson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on May 1, 1860. He died in Edmonton, Alberta on February 6, 1949. He took the last name Johnson in the west.

Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Jón Pétursson and Ingunn Ólafsdóttir, in 1876. They settled in the Fljóts Settlement in New Iceland where they lived until 1880. They were in Winnipeg until the spring of 1881 when they moved to the Hallson Settlement in N. Dakota. Jón and Sigurbjörg got married and started farming there. They moved west to Calgary, Alberta in 1888 but took land in Markerville where they lived until 1903. They moved from there to Edmonton, which was undergoing extensive development, and Jón entered the real estate business. He prospered in the following years.
