Valgerður came west in 1876 with her parents, Bjarni Jónsson and Þorbjörg Björnsdóttir; they moved to Winnipeg. Jóhann came west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 with his father and younger brother. They first lived in Ontario, moved to Lockport, Nova Scotia, but followed life’s road to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jóhann took land in the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota in 1882 but moved from there and took land in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba in 1884 and lived there until 1906. They then moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan where they took land and then bought more in the Kandahar/Dafoe area. They lived there eleven years, but then sold the farm and moved to Wynyard.
