Benedikt moved to Ontario, Canada in 1878 and got a job at a sawmill in Parry Sound. He later took land in the Muskoka district, but soon abandoned it and moved west to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Margrét came west to Winnipeg with her parents, Sigmundur Steingrímsson and Jórunn Sigurðardóttir, in 1879. Benedikt and Margrét married there and moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. From there they moved north to New Iceland and settled near Gimli, but then traveled west to the Lögberg Settlement in Saskatchewan. In 1902, Benedikt and his son Valdimar went to the Vallar Settlement, where they took land about 25 km (15.5 miles) south of Churchbridge.
