Friðrik Sveinsson was born on November 4, 1864 in Eyjafjarðarsýsla. He died in Winnipeg on May 25, 1942. He took the name Fred Swanson in Canada.

Friðrik came west to Canada in 1873 with his foster parents, Ólafur Ólafsson from Espihóli and Ólöf Jónsdóttir. He moved south with them to Wisconsin and lived in Milwaukee until 1875. They moved from there in 1879 to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Friðrik was there with them for a few years but then moved to Winnipeg and lived there the rest of his life. Sigríður was the daughter of Jón Grímsson Laxdal in Eyjafjörður.
