Björn was the son of Guðmundur Jónsson and Jónína Björnsdóttir who came west with their children in 1903. They settled in the Álftavatn Settlement and lived there until 1908. They moved north to the Siglunes Settlement and that is where Björn grew up. Guðlaug was the daughter of Jónas Kristján Jónasson who came west newly married to his second wife Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir in 1883. Björn bought the land of Andrés Gíslason in the community in 1920, built a good estate and lived there.
