Jósef came west with his son Helgi Jón in 1878. They were first in New Iceland, then moved to the Argyle Settlement in 1881. Jóhann Pétur and Guðrún arrived there in 1883. Jósef later moved to the Hóla Settlement. From there, he went north to Lake Manitoba and lived for a year at Birds Island but then settled at Big Point in 1895.
