Guðmundur came west in 1876 with his three children. He went to New Iceland but did not live there long; he died shortly after moving there. The children were taken in as fosters. The girls grew up in Manitoba, and in 1912 they were both married to Canadians and lived in Winnipeg. Þórarinn was adopted by Sveinbjörn Jóhannesson and his wife.
