Guðmundur Hafsteinsson fæddist í Húnavatnssýslu árið 1833. Maki: Björg Jónsdóttir f. 1854 í Húnavatnssýslu. Hafstein vestra. Börn: 1. Jón f. 1874 2. Þóra f. 1876 3. Sófónías f. 1880 4. Kristín. Þau fluttu vestur til Winnipeg í Manitoba árið 1883 og námu land í Thingvallabyggð í N. Dakota sama ár.
