Anna was the daughter of Guðmundur Jónsson and Sigríður Bjarnadóttir of N. Dakota. There she attended elementary school, went to Winnipeg to a trade school and later to a teacher training program at the University of N. Dakota. She taught there for several years before marriage. Jóhann was the son of Bjarni Guðmundsson Dalsted and his second wife, Guðný Þóra Þorsteinsdóttir. They lived in the Akra settlement in N. Dakota. Óli Bjarnason, as he was often called in his hometown, attended a trade school and became a salesman. He sold and bought agricultural products for a time but then mainly sold feed products for the Feed Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
