Bjarn grew up in Borgarfjörður eystri, then went to Copenhagen to study in his late twenties. Started in carpentry, but then turned to languages and photography. He returned to Iceland in the spring of 1897 and got married. He worked at various jobs in the east, but in 1903 the couple moved west across the ocean and settled in Winnipeg. There, Þorsteinn worked as a carpenter, but in 1907 they moved to Selkirk, where he practiced photography and image development. They lived there until 1939, then moved back to Winnipeg. Björg was the daughter of Jón Jónsson from Sledbrjót and Guðrún Jónsdóttir, who came west the same year with several children.
