Elín came west in 1903 with her father, Magnús Jóhannsson, and they settled in Gimli in New Iceland. Elín lived there the rest of her life. Hannes was the son of Kristján Sigurjón Guðmundsson and Helga Jóhanna Þórðardóttir, who came west in 1888 and settled in New Iceland. Hannes grew up there and attended school in Gimli. He lived the rest of his life there as well.
