Eric Halfdán Haraldsson was born on June 12, 1922 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. He was known as Rev. Eric H Sigmar in the west.

Eric was the son of Rev. Haraldur Sigmar and Anna Margrethe Thorlakson. He grew up with his parents in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) 1922-1926 and in Mountain, N. Dakota 1926-1940. In 1942 he studied at the University of N. Dakota, in 1944 at Gettysburg College, and Philadelphia Lutheran Seminary in 1946. He then went to Iceland and studied at the University of Iceland in 1953-1954 and in Lundar in 1954. He was an ordained pastor and served first in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba in the years 1947-51, Hallgríms congregation in Seattle, Washington 1951-55. Finally, he served St. Stephen’s congregation at St. James in Winnipeg from 1955. He was president of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church Society of Icelanders in the West from 1956 and secretary of the society 1951-56.
