Jónas was the son of Karólína Jónasdóttir and Jóhann Jóhannsson. He came west to Winnipeg with his mother in 1887 while his father had come west in 1884. Jónas grew up in the city and Solveig came there in 1904. They got married there and Jónas worked as a carpenter. In 1914 they moved west to Point Roberts and lived there after that.
