Guðjón Magnússon was born in Barrie, Ontario on September 15, 1877. He died in Cypress River, Manitoba on July 7, 1942. He took the last name Ruth in the west.

Guðjón was the son of Guðmundur Magnússon and Helga Jónsdóttir, early settlers in Manitoba. They were first in Ontario for three years, moved from there to Winnipeg where they lived 4 years. They acquired land after 4 years near the Cypress River. Guðjón later acquired land there and gradually expanded his landholding through purchases until he owned 640 acres. Guðjón took the name Ruth like his father.
