Guðmundur was the son of Jóhann Ólaf Bjarnason Dalsted and Anna Kristína Guðmundsdóttir in N. Dakota. He grew up in the Icelandic community N. Dakota, attended graduate school at Columbia University in New York, joined the Navy in 1942, and a year later he was in special training in the capital, Washington D.C., which led to his being sent to Iceland in 1943. There he worked at Camp Knox in Reykjavík in the Navy’s intelligence service. After returning home, he worked for a long time at the Farmers Home Administration in the capital. This institution provides loans to farmers for construction on their land.
