Guðrún was the daughter of Sigtryggur Ó. Bjerring and Sigríður Jónsdóttir in Winnipeg. She completed her elementary education there and received a B. A. degree from the University of Manitoba. She first worked as a reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press and later for the National Film Board of Canada, where she was the Director of Educational Visuals, overseeing the production of educational films. Her husband was educated at the University of Manitoba and also worked for the National Film Board.
