Halldóra Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir was born in New Jersey in the United States on November 27, 1893.

Halldóra was the daughter of Jón Einarsson and Hallbjörg Halldórsdóttir in Lundar, Manitoba. Jón and Hallbjörg moved to New York in 1887, but in 1897 they went west to Winnipeg and in 1900 to Lundar. There Halldóra grew up and at a young age she attracted attention for her fine needlework. She was very involved in community affairs, secretary of a gardening club and chairman of a women’s club. At first she worked both in the women’s club of the Lutheran church in Lundar and later in the women’s club of the Icelandic church in Winnipeg when she moved there. Einvarður was the son of Þórarinn Guðlaugsson, a farmer in Lundar, and his wife.
