Ólafur came west alone to Ontario in 1876 and moved east from there to Markland, Nova Scotia. Helga arrived there in 1878 with Ólaf, just a year old. They lived in the community for a few years, later in Halifax but then moved west to Winnipeg in 1883 where they lived after that. Ólafur had a dairy farm west of the city at what is now 510 Maryland St. He may have called himself Fellsted in Markland but changed it to Olsen when he arrived in Winnipeg.
