Hlaðgerður Jónasdóttir was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on January 29, 1883. She is registered with the last name Kristjánsson in the west.

Hlaðgerður came west to N. Dakota in 1893 with her parents, Jónas Kristjánsson and Guðrún Þorsteinsdóttir. She lived in Pembina 1893-1901, then moved north to Winnipeg. She attended school in the city and went to graduate school in Chicago in 1912. There she studied at the art school The Art Institute and graduated there in 1914. She taught drawing and painting for a while, but then decided to sew clothes. She was always an active participant in the social affairs of the Western Icelanders in Winnipeg.
