Jóhannes Páll Pálsson was born at Ólafsfjörður in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on May 13, 1881.

Jóhannes came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba, with his parents and siblings in 1894. He obtained his teacher’s license in Winnipeg in 1903 and taught in various places in the province such as Ísafold, Hnausa and Geysir, but in 1907 and 1908 he taught at the Grandy School in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. He taught there and lived there. From there he moved to Winnipeg and completed his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1909. He was a doctor in New Iceland from 1909-1918, Elfros, Saskatchewan from 1918-1930, Langham, Saskatchewan from 1930-1932 and finally Broden, Saskatchewan from 1932-1946. He then settled in Calgary, Alberta, where he lived for eight years, but from there he moved to Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
