Jón was the son of Árni Sveinsson and Guðrún Helga Jónsdóttir, early settlers in Manitoba. Sigurveig’s parents were Sigurbjörn Jóhannsson and María Jónsdóttir, who came west in 1889. Jón was a child when his parents moved from New Iceland and settled in the Argyle settlement. There he completed his elementary school education, then went to trade school in Winnipeg. After completing his education, he became a farmer in the Argyle settlement, later moving to Baldur and working as a blacksmith there.
