Jón Jónsson was born on November 8, 1854 at Hörgárdal in Eyjafjarðarsýsla. He took the last name Hörgdal in the west.
Spouse: June 19, 1880 Kristrún Hallgrímsdóttir b. 1861 in Skagafjarðarsýsla.

Jón came west across the ocean to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 and settled in New Iceland. On the same ship was Kristrún with her parents. Jón worked in Winnipeg in 1878 and there he met by chance Jóhann Pétur Hallsson who was then on his way from New Iceland south to N. Dakota. Jón followed and by then his mother, Karitas Árnadóttir, had come west. Together they took land in the settlement that later became Hallson in 1879. Jón ended up in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1918 and lived in Elfros.
