Jón Stefánsson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on June 5, 1861. He died in Manitoba on September 5, 1939.

Jón and Sæunn came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and married there. They moved to New Iceland the same year and Jón took land west of Gimli. They lived there until 1912 but were among the first Icelanders to move to Elm Point on the northern shore of Lake Manitoba. They lived there until 1936 when they gave up farming and moved to the village of Steep Rock.
