Jón Vídalín Magnússon was born at Nýjabæ in the Hnausa settlement in 1885. He died there on July 13, 1963.

Jón was the son of Magnús Magnússon and Ingibjörg Sveinsdóttir of Eyjólfsstaðir in the Hnausa settlement in New Iceland. When Jón was old enough, he went fishing on Lake Winnipeg with his older brothers, who had founded the Magnusson Bros. Company. Later, he began building boats. Jón and Rannveig always lived in Magnusville in the Hnausa settlement.
