Julía was the daughter of Grímur Þórðarson and Ingibjörg Snæbjarnardóttur in the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota. She pursued an education, graduating in 1924 from the University of Minnesota with a degree in nursing. George was of Irish and English descent. He was an engineer and worked for Hjörtur Þórðarson’s company, Thordarson Electric Co. He later founded the Chicago Transformer Corp. with Árni Helgason, a Chicago councilman.
