Kári Stefánsson was born in Akureyri in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on March 25, 1892. He had the last name Byron in the west.

Kári’s parents, Stefán Björnsson and Guðbjörg Sigurðardóttir, brought him west in 1893. They settled in the Shoal Lake settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) where Kári grew up. He lived a number of years in Clarkleigh, Manitoba before he settled in Lundar. He was a farmer and also fished and ran a fish store. Then he ran a guest house in town. He was involved in social issues, chairman and deputy chairman of various associations and institutions. Anna was the daughter of Sigurður Jónsson and Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir, who came west in the summer of 1900.
