Lorne was the son of Gísli Benediktsson and Guðrún Sigríður Pálsdóttir in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. Anne’s parents, Einar and Mathilda, were of Norwegian descent. Lorne graduated from high school in 1937 in Wynyard. He got a job with the National Grain Co. in Winnipeg, where he worked until he joined the army. When the war ended, he was hired by The Searle Grain Co., which had plants in many parts of the Canadian prairies. In 1948, he became a car dealer in the province, but soon after he opened his own car dealership in Morrin, Alberta. Anne studied nursing and worked in a hospital in Portage la Prairie.
