Ólafur was the son of Þórður Eggert Grímsson and Sveinbjörg Torfadóttir. Þórður’s father and Ólafur’s grandfather took the name Laxdal in the west and so did his descendants. Ólafur grew up in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) and pursued an education. He completed his BA in Saskatoon and studied medicine in Toronto. He specialized in pediatrics.
