Otto Lawrence Bernhöft was born in the Akra settlement on November 11, 1916.

Otto was the son of Edward L A Bernhöft and Sigurbjörg S Ólafsdóttir in N. Dakota. He pursued an educational career. After completing elementary school, he went to Mavel, N. Dakota, and completed his teacher’s license there. He was in the army from 1939-1944 and then attended North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. He completed his M. Sc. degree in chemistry in 1952. He was then hired as a teacher at Fargo Central High School and later became principal of the same school. Irene was a licensed teacher and taught for a long time.
