Pálmi was the son of Jón Stefánsson and Sæunn Jónsdóttir in Steep Rock, Manitoba. He engaged in both farming and fishing while living in New Iceland. They moved to Steep Rock in 1912 and lived there thereafter. Kristín attended elementary and middle school in Gimli, then went on to teacher training in Brandon. She taught for a time before she married and also after her children were old enough and could follow her to work. They attended Allenby School in Steep Rock.
