Rolfe was the son of Barði Skúlason from Reykjavellir in Lýtingsstaðahreppur in Skagafjarðarsýsla and his wife Charlotte Heaton Robinson in N. Dakota. Rolfe was a teenager when he joined the army and was sent to war in Europe in 1917. He fought in France and returned in 1919. Education came naturally to the Bardi children. Rolfe graduated with a B.A. from Oregon State University in 1923 and a law degree from Yale University two years later. He worked in partnership with his father in his law firm in Portland.
