Sigurbjörn Sigurðsson was born at Árnes in New Iceland on October 6, 1892.

Sigurbjörn was the son of Sigurður Sigurbjörnsson and Snjólaugur Jóhannesdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland. He went to middle school in Árnes, commercial school in Winnipeg, and studied singing with Steingrímur Hall, a composer in that city. He became a young merchant in Riverton, but in 1940 he was appointed Director of Fisheries in the province. He worked there until 1960, then moved west to Vancouver. He was the choir director in the Lutheran church in Winnipeg and also the Icelandic Men’s Choir there. He composed several hymns and psalms.
