Sigurveig’s parents were Sigurbjörn Jóhannsson and María Jónsdóttir, who came west in 1889. Her older sister was Jakobína Johnson, a poet in Seattle. Jón was the son of Árni Sveinsson and Guðrún Helga Jónsdóttir, early settlers in Manitoba. Jón was a young child when his parents moved from New Iceland and settled in the Argyle settlement. There he completed elementary school, then went to trade school in Winnipeg. After graduating, he became a farmer in the Argyle settlement, later moving to Baldur and working as a blacksmith there.
