Snjólaug was the daughter of Sigurjón Sigurðsson, shop owner in Árborg and later in Winnipeg, and his wife, Jóna Guðríður Jónsdóttir. Snjólaug went to middle school in Winnipeg, where she studied singing. She continued her studies in New York. She graduated in Musicology and Music, L.L.M., in Winnipeg (Licentiate of Music), L.R.S.M. (Licentiate Royal School of Music, London, England) and A.R.C.T. (Associate Royal Conservatory, Toronto).
