Þorbergur Þorvaldsson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on August 24, 1883. He died on October 4, 1965 in Saskatoon. He was known as Thorbergur Thorvaldsson in the west.

Þorbergur was the son of Þorvaldur Þorvaldsson and his wife, Þuríður Þorbergsdóttir who came west from Viðvíkurhreppur in Skagafjörður in 1887. They settled in New Iceland and Þorbergur grew up there. He chose education and attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with a B.A. 1906. He then went to the United States, enrolled at Harvard University in 1908 and completed his M.A. degree in 1909 and doctorate in 1911. He studied further at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden 1911-1912 and the University of Liverpool 1912-1913. You can read about his work in Atvinna below. Margrét was the daughter of Hans Vilhelm Pálsson, who came west from Skagafjarðarsýsla in 1883, and Jónína Margrét Nikuládóttir.
