Þórey was the daughter of Sigurgrímur Gíslason, a carpenter in Winnipeg, and Hallbera Guðrún Vigfúsdóttir. Philip’s parents, Ólafur Pétursson and Annie Azelia McNab, first lived in Roseau, Minnesota, then in Kristnes in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð), later in Foam Lake and lastly in Winnipeg in 1912. After finishing elementary and high school, Philip went to teacher training in Winnipeg and obtained his qualifications in 1923. After a year of study at the University of Manitoba in 1926, he enrolled at the University of Chicago, where he studied until 1929. It was then clear where his mind was headed, and he completed his degree in theology from Meadville Theological School in Chicago 1932.
