Þorgerður was from Hóla in Hörðudal in Dalasýsla. Her parents, Jón Jónsson and Halldór Baldvinsdóttir, came west in 1883 and settled in Winnipeg. Halldór was the son of Sigurður Sigurðsson and Ragnheiður Þorveigur Þórdardóttir in Rauðamel in Mýrasýsla. Halldór grew up there until the age of seventeen, then came west across the ocean in the fall of 1901. He went to Winnipeg and lived there all his life. He became a mason and later a master builder, with extensive activity in the construction industry for half a century.
