Unnur Anna was the daughter of Friðrik Kristjánsson, a real estate agent in Winnipeg, and his wife, Hólmfríður Jósefsdóttir. After completing her elementary education, she began college studies. In 1959, she completed her R.N. degree at the Winnipeg General Hospital of Nursing and her teaching degree in nursing from the University of Manitoba. She then went to Quebec where she completed her Bachelor of Nursing degree from McGill University in Montreal. From there, she traveled west to Seattle where she completed her Master of Nursing from the University of Washington. During her academic career, she received several awards for outstanding achievements. She chose to work in nursing in her hometown, Winnipeg, where she worked at the General Hospital and in 1961-1962 at Victoria Hospital. She turned to teaching and taught nursing at the University of Manitoba in 1963-1965. At the end of that period, she became principal of the General Hospital School of Nursing in Winnipeg. Her husband had an Irish father and a Scottish mother. He graduated from the University of Manitoba and became a physician at the Selkirk Asylum.
