Aðalbjörg came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1878 with her foster parents Páll Gunnarsson and his wife. Her parents and siblings arrived there in 1883.
Sigurður and Aðalbjörg settled in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land in the Foam Lake community. He bought additional land and did very well. He later bought a house in the village and rented out his lands.
