Agnar learned chess as a young man from his father and became the chess champion in both Winnipeg and Manitoba. Photo WtW

Ágúst Magnússon was born on October 25, 1863 in Húnavatnssýsla.  He died in the Lundar Settlement on February 24, 1953. He was known as August Magnusson in the west.

Spouse: February 5, 1898 Ragnheiður Jóhannsdóttir Straumfjörð b. in Mikley February 5,1878.

Children: 1. Agnar Rae b. June 2, 1900 2. Jóhann Magnús b. June 15, 1905 3. Kristberg Margeir b. May 18, 1910. They also fostered Alexandra, Magný, and Ágústa who were daughters of Rósa who died when they were young.

Ágúst emigrated to Canada in 1887. He and Bergmann Þorbergsson from Árnessýsla landed in Quebec and got jobs with the Hudson Bay transporting materials across the north country. He worked there for two years and then moved west to Brandon, Manitoba where his parents, Magnús Mágnússon and Margrét Jónsdóttir, brother Guðmundur, and sisters Rósa and Guðrún lived. The family moved north to the Isafold Settlement in New Iceland. They lived in Mikley for awhile where Ágúst worked as a lighthouse keeper. In 1903, Ágúst and Ragnheiður took their own land in the Lundar Settlement.
