Alvin was the son of Dr. Ágúst Blöndal and Guðrún Stefánsdóttir in Winnipeg. He attended school there and worked various jobs before joining the Air Force on June 16, 1943. He was stationed in Brandon, Coal Harbor in Vancouver and in Regina, Saskatchewan. After he was discharged from military service on February 14, 1945, he got a job at a radio station in Winnipeg. He worked there for six years, then moved to Toronto where he also worked in radio.
